Yeah it keeps sneaking up on me too. Yesterday I ran on the treadmill at lunch thinking it would be nearly the 36 degrees it was when I left the house . W hen walked outside for my “cool down” around 1pm I was like, “fuck”. It was almost 70 and gorgeous.

Knowing it would be nice again today I planned to drive the 02 but bailed because it was foggy and wet this morning...gorgeous again. At least I will run outside today.

Had a few cold days but Georgia once again decided to give us an extension on fall. My favorite season lasts forever here. Love it!

Just got back from a trip to town in my E55. It’s 19°C here right now. Normally at this time of year it would be tucked gently away into the garage and there would be 6-12" of snow on the ground.

Was contemplating the fact that it was so nice out today and that I hadn’t actually gotten around to taking the insurance off while I ate lunch and my neighbour drove by in his convertible XJS. That convinced me that I better take the opportunity while it exists! I might just do it again tomorrow!

This is the first week that I’ve moved the SS into the garage (from the shop) since it was going to be nice all week so I’d have no reason not to take it every morning. What a great car... Need to get in the habit of this every Sunday when there’s no nastiness in the forecast (or no need for me to commute in the truck).

Hunting in this weather next week. Last year it was -21°C one morning! I guess it averages out about right...

We have a gorgeous silver maple in our back yard, probably 50 feet tall, maybe a bit more. Sadly, it is dying and will have to come down soon. I had an arborist out to look at it, and he said it is the biggest silver maple he’s ever seen in Austin. Of course, it is not a native here, and the series of droughts we’ve experienced just wore it out. I’m sad, because it gave us tons of wonderful shade in the back, it provides a waypoint for the birds coming to our feeder, and it’s the tree I hung a swing on for our kids. I’m going to keep it as long as I can, but it will soon become dangerous.

Plant another one. Might require some maintenance to keep it growing but it’ll be worth it.

That is really sad...

We planted a really nice Cleveland pear at our old house that was beautiful in the spring and fall, as well as a couple others . I’ve failed to plant any trees at our new house - need to remedy that. W e have done quite a few bushes and had the landscaping redone, but it’s not the same as a tree you can watch grow to maturity over the years.

Heating is just one symptom  of a very complex problem. Almost like turning on your AC while your house in on fire.

I’ve got a very large hackberry in the yard as well, but even that is not long for this world. They grow fast, but they became very top heavy. I have already planted a Monterey oak next to it, a tree that is a fast grower and a drought-tolerant native to these parts. I also had two silver maples in the front that I lost years ago, and those too have been replaced with a Monterey oak. We’re doing a major backyard renovation project, and I will likely plant another, or maybe a local ornamental.

I have planted a local Monterey oak next to it, but I had a company do it. They brought what was already a nicely mature sapling, and did a better job of digging the hole than I could ever do. I’ve also got a hackberry in the back, but I’m thinking of adding another Monterey or local ornamental as part of our backyard renovation project.

Seems like a local and more drought tolerant tree would be nice but maples are just something special. Are there are any less thirsty maple variants that you could think about planting?

Maybe, I have to research it. There is a famous state natural area here in TX called Lost Maples that features a stand of Uvalde big tooth maples. That might definitely be something to look into.

I’m thinking a few Cleveland pears, a few Leyland cypress, a few Loblolly pines, and a redbud or maybe a maple for some extra color.

We’ll see what my wallet (and back) can handle.

Just got home from a 6 mile run/walk and there was a rattler in the trail towards the end. Definitely still toasty out.
